Munich • The new BMW X1 will become the fourth model in the Bavarian automaker’s lineup of X vehicles when it goes on sale in Canada in May as a 2012 model for a base price of $38,500.  That's not bad for a smaller, less-powerful engine, at least from a pure horsepower perspective. BMW's new turbo 2.0 puts out 241 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The virtue of the trade-off in horsepower and torque comes in the delivery. The flip side of the powertrain’s personality is unusual to say the least. Drive it as though there’s an egg between your right foot and the gas pedal and it slips into its economy mode, with the engine barely pushing the tachometer needle over 1,400 rpm. Even at elevated highway speeds, the four still loafs along at surprisingly low revs. This, perhaps, explains the test average fuel economy of 9.7 litres per 100 kilometres — and it certainly was not being driven with an eye to economy.BMW XI 2012

New engine generation constitutes the latest innovative highlight of the BMW EfficientDynamics strategy, 2.0-litre engine with torque upgrade compared to the previous engine and exceptionally low fuel consumption and emissions.New BMW X1 xDrive28i combines even more agility with significant reduction in fuel consumption and emissions; average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle: 7.9 litres/100 km or 35.7 mpg imp (an improvement of 1.5 litres / 5.7 mpg),BMW XI 2012 CO2 emissions: 183 g/km (down by 38 g), acceleration from standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.1 seconds (manual transmission) or 6.5 seconds (automatic transmission, down by 0.3 seconds).BMW XI 2012This new engine features BMW’s twin-scroll turbocharger and is rated at 241 horsepower at 5,000 rpm with a hefty delivery of torque rated at 258 pound-feet that is available from a low 1,250 rpm. This kind of power means the X1 is a brisk performer that never feels underpowered despite its weight of 1,690 kilograms. BMW XI 2012

BMW X1 2012,BMW X1 2012 reviewBMW XI 2012The real-world result is, quite predictably, that the turbo four feels more powerful off the line and while accelerating in gear from low RPM. BMW XI 2012Both in town and on the highway, the new four-cylinder feels faster than the old six-cylinder without giving up any of the smoothness.BMW XI 2012It is such that one tends to forget this is not the Touring wagon. Understeer is also a non-issue for two reasons — the P225/50R17 tires and a top-notch electronic stability system (DSC). This electronic overseer not only does all of the usual understeer/oversteer corrections (in conjunction with xDrive), it has dynamic traction control that takes it to the next level.Yet again premium carmaker BMW has successfully transplanted the BMW X model concept to a new vehicle segment to create a unique product. BMW XI 2012Now the BMW X1 is breaking new ground, this time in terms of the BMW EfficientDynamics programme. The new 180 kW/245 hp powerplant combines a power and torque upgrade over the previous engine with substantially reduced fuel consumption and emissions.BMW XI 2012
